Who Can Get Medicare Under 65?

If you’re under 65 you can get Medicare:

  • After receiving Social Security disability benefits or Railroad Retirement Board disability benefits for 24 months.
  • If you have End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) and are on dialysis or getting a kidney transplant.
  • If you’re diagnosed with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), or Lou Gherig’s Disease.

When Do My Benefits Begin?

The time your benefits start depend on the category you fall into:

  • If you have received disability benefits for 24 months, you will get a Medicare card in the mail.
  • With ALS, your benefits start the month you start receiving Social Security benefits.
  • If you have ESRD, when the benefits start depends on whether you’re on dialysis or getting a transplant.
    • If you’re on dialysis, coverage starts on the first day of the fourth month of dialysis treatments.
    • If you are getting a transplant, the coverage starts the month you’re admitted to a hospital that accepts Medicare.
