When Can I Apply?

For most, you can apply when you are nearing your 65th birthday. Your first opportunity for enrollment takes place during the Initial Enrollment Period. This includes the month you turn 65, and the three months before and after it.

If you are under 65 but are receiving disability benefits, you will automatically be enrolled after you have been receiving those benefits for 24 months.

If you missed your Initial Enrollment Period, you can apply during the General Enrollment Period (January 1 – March 31).

What Are The Steps?

When you apply for Medicare, you can apply by:

  • Phone – Calling Social Security allows you to sign up from home. However, you may be placed on hold for extended periods of time.
  • Social Security office visit – Visiting your Social Security office may require setting up an appointment beforehand. It is best to call ahead of time before making this visit.
  • Going online – You can apply online on the Social Security website. All you need to do is fill out the appropriate information, making it the quickest way to apply.
