What Are Special Enrollment Periods?

You can qualify for a Special Enrollment Period if:

Your Medicare plan goes bankrupt.
Your Medicare Advantage Plan decides to stop offering services in your area.
You had employer-provided insurance that you were using as evidence of creditable coverage that ended.
You were institutionalized.
You become eligible for Extra Help from Medicare.
You become, or cease to be, a Qualified Medicare beneficiary.
You start Medicaid.

Your Medicaid ends.
You were in a chronic condition Medicare Advantage Plan, and no longer have the chronic condition.
You were in a Special Needs Medicare Advantage Plan, and no longer have the special needs.
You develop a special need that requires a special need Medicare Advantage Plan.
You changed where you live.
You have the opportunity to get other coverage.
Your plan has changed its contract with Medicare.

A Special Enrollment Period can last up to eight months and will start as soon as you have stopped working or lose your group health plan, for example.
